May 16th is Love A Tree Day!

Trees produce oxygen that is the lifeline of all living beings, so it only makes sense that there is a day designated to showing them some love! With Love A Tree Day falling right in the middle of Garden for Wildlife Month, now is the perfect time to get outside and do your part to preserve the earth’s natural treasures.

Here are a few ideas of things you can do on your own, or with family and friends:

Find your garden gloves and get planting!
Gather the family and head to your local community center to see what tree planting activities you can get involved in. This is an efficient way to contribute to your community’s beautification efforts as well as develop a bond with those who live around you. You can complement this experience by planting in your own backyard! Not sure what trees might grow best in your backyard? No worries, Arbor Day Foundation allows you to search for the kind of trees you’re looking for (such as shade trees or fruit trees) and the atmosphere you live in then gives you a list of trees that will thrive in your environmental surroundings1.

Gardening can also be a great learning experience for kids to understand how plants are able to provide the resources we as humans rely on. According to PBS Parents, gardening can positively impact children’s early education and will have them asking questions such as, “Why do plants need sun,” “Why are worms good for plants,” or, “How does photosynthesis work?”

Support the cause
America’s forests are facing many threats such as infestations of diseases, pests, development, and of course climate change. The Nature Conservancy warns that without these forests, half of the nation’s water can go unfiltered, twelve percent of U.S. carbon emissions won’t be absorbed, and many species of plants and animals can lose their homes. If you want to get more involved in conserving Earth’s forests, there are a large number of non-profit organizations dedicated to doing just that. It can be an amazing way to meet new people and be part of something that is much bigger than yourself. If you want to make a lasting difference in your own front yard, The National Wildlife Federation gives people a chance to turn their yard into a Certified Wildlife Habitat2. It’s a fun project you and your family can get into and even offers discounts on items such as bird baths, feeders, and others that could complement your wildlife garden.

Save the trees
You can help save our world’s forests not only by planting trees, but reducing your carbon footprint when you reduce, reuse, and recycle! Did you know that paper can be recycled up to seven times? The production of recycled paper produces less air pollution than making paper from raw materials. A couple more ways to reduce your footprint is to switch to e-Billing– easily view your account and statements without receiving pieces of paper in the mail that will only end up in the recycle bin. Additionally, many companies now use paperless statements such as banks, credit unions, and any retail stores that offer in-store credit and rewards. Taking small steps such as these will help lead to less landfill and significantly less trees being cut down in the long run.
